Abstract:

Though searches conducted over the past 35 years have failed to detect the existence of Extraterrestrial Intelligence (ETI), scientific interest in this fascinating endeavour has not subsided. On the contrary, new knowledge gained in a number of fields has fostered confidence in the scientific community that intelligent life is a widespread phenomenon in our galaxy and that many of the alien civilisations are probably more advanced than we are. With the aid of highly sophisticated equipment, scientists conducting SETI projects are optimistic about identifying extraterrestrial artificial signals within the coming decade.
