There is an increasing awareness that continuing the economic growth necessary to maintain our civilization causes environmental and resource problems that may not be resolvable within a terrestrial context. Since the early seventies there has been an increasing body of opinion that proposes the use of space for economic activities as one of the primary means of overcoming these problems.
