Abstract:
The space age began nearly forty years ago, when Sputnik became the Earth’s first man-made satellite. Since then, humanity accomplished a great many feats in space. Countries around the world regularly rely on satellites for long-haul communications. Human access to space made accurate weather forecasting reliable for the first time in history. Orbiting remote sensing satellites predict crop yields and have rediscovered ancient cities forgotten for centuries. Unmanned space probes travelled to other planets and astronauts spent months on end in orbit. Most notable, and perhaps best remembered, were the first Moon landings in 1969, a quarter century ago.
