Abstract:

A manned landing and exploration mission to Mars will represent the most spectacular adventure in the history of human civilisation. Since Mars is far from Earth, it will greatly surpass the technical achievement represented by the manned lunar landing missions. However, a manned expedition to that planet should not be abandoned after a few missions. The cost would be too high, and the scientific benefits could be achieved by unmanned robot vehicles. A manned expedition should be undertaken with the intention of setting up a permanent base for long-term exploration and eventual colonisation.
