Abstract:
On the 20th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission, President Bush charged NASA with developing plans for a permanently manned lunar base and then extending the human domain on to Mars [1]. NASA had been working on lunar return concepts for some time [2,3]. Recent reports from the Office of Exploration suggest several case studies for both manned lunar and planetary missions under consideration [4]. Assembly in Low Earth Orbit has been suggested for the missions to Phobos and Mars [4].
