Abstract:

In any major high-tech industry training is an important factor for success, and the space industry is no exception. Training has always been concluded as part of any satellite mission, not least because such missions costs millions of (usually taxpayers) pounds. However, for manned space missions, training has even more importance, because the loss of a mission may sadly have to be counted in more than just pounds alone. The MSCC will be one of the major European centres involved in the forthcoming Columbus manned space mission operations. The Deutsche Forschungsanstalt fuer Luft-und Raumfahrt (DLR) engineers with their manned space missions’ experience, together with Cray Systems technical know-how in training systems, are cooperating in a technical study to develop the MSCC training concept and to define the required supporting tools. The approach taken in this study and the corresponding outputs are the subject of this paper.
