Abstract:

The successful Viking missions in the middle of 70s were the highest achievement in Mars exploration. Two Viking landers have given a great body or new data on Mars. However, Soffen, one of the Viking program managers, wrote: “The thing that Viking cannot do is move”. It seems reasonable that the next major step should be the exploration of various Martian regions and return of Mars samples to Earth.
