Abstract:

After the Viking lander missions to Mars, it was the hope of the space community that a Mars sample return (MSR) mission would soon follow. Even though that hope did not materialise, significant interest in returning samples of Mars to Earth persists, since the analysis of such samples offers the potential for significant scientific gains. While an MSR mission is still a near-term goal for solar system exploration, ways of lowering the costs of such missions is being pursued actively. In the past few years, MSR mission cost estimates has shrunk from over $10 billion to under $1 billion and the present fiscal environment mandates even further cost reductions.
