Abstract:

Mass media, in the present sense of the term, only began to develop about a hundred years ago with the appearance of large-circulation daily papers, as compared with the relatively low circulation of earlier newspapers. The most obvious early example of space in the media is provided by the reporting of the Martian controversy.
