Abstract:

In the early 1970s the Soviet Union conducted a series of ambitious lunar missions utilising robotic spacecraft with the capability to return samples of lunar soil to Earth and rover vehicles with the ability to traverse wide areas of the Moon’s. Luna’s 16 and 17 performed some of the most complex tasks ever attempted by unmanned spacecraft, and quite rightly these missions are still regarded as being among the highlights of the exploration of the Solar System by means of robotic vehicles,
