Motivations for Space Exploration: A Survey within the Space Community

Abstract:
Several studies have attempted to characterize motivations for the exploration of outer space [1, 2]. Most such studies have focused on input from participants from specific countries, and a more global study focusing on motivations for space exploration is lacking. Furthermore, previous studies have, in most cases, focused on the general population, but not necessarily those who might be more interested in and aware of space activities. This paper aims to highlight the motivations for space exploration, from the viewpoint of students and professionals around the world working in the aerospace sector or interested in this sector. Preliminary results of an online survey are used to highlight major motivations for space exploration as viewed by the target audience and the factors that might be affecting such opinions.
