Abstract:

The Moon was one of the first targets at the beginning of the spaceflight era. The US Ranger missions took the first high resolution pictures before impacting the lunar surface. In preparation for finding landing sites for the Apollo missions, the US Lunar Orbiter series provided almost global coverage. As most of the data of the 60s and 70s were taken from an equatorial orbit, knowledge of the polar regions is limited.
