Abstract:

In its history as an oxidizer for rocket propulsion, Nitrous Oxide has been both the villain and the hero of its story. It has been hailed as an eco-friendly alternative to push rocketry into a greener and more sustainable age, but when handled improperly it has resulted in horrendous accidents. This paper will explore the past, present and future for this well known but sometimes misunderstood propellant and its multi-purpose commercial applications. The authors’ vision of the further promotion of nitrous oxide towards servicing commercial space exploration is presented.
