Abstract:

A space vehicle which is moving al super-sonic speed through the partly ionized gas (plasma) of the Earth’s upper atmosphere creates a “disturbance” (Fig. I). In the ram direction the plasma density may be slightly enhanced, whereas in the vehicle wake there is a dramatic depletion in the density of the plasma electrons and ions. Also, the average plasma energy may be significantly alt r d by the presence oft he spacecraft.
