Abstract:

It is useful to recall that, at the time the INTELSAT system was established, there was no global system in existence. Cable systems were active in some sectors, but did not have the need to coordinate the activities of hundreds of traffic sources either technically or operationally. Although this was a new environment for the fledging INTELSAT system, satellite transmission technology was a natural outgrowth of microwave technology which had reach maturity by the late 1960’s.
