Abstract:

The first EVA from the Mir base block was accomplished on April 11, 1987. Ten years later, on April 29, 1997, American cosmonaut Linenger accompanied his Soviet Commander Tsibliyev for the 60th EVA from the Mir complex. During that decade 20 teams of cosmonauts had logged EVA outside the Mir complex totalling 263 hours 54 minutes. Individually, 28 cosmonauts had completed 117 EVAs during 39 miss ions totalling 512 hours 10 minutes. This impressive record was also a demonstration of routine EVA operations as a precursor to the International Space Station programme early in the next century.
