Abstract:

The thinning of the ozone layer, deforestation of the Amazonian rain forest, the effects of acid rain on the forests and lakes of the Baltic countries and southern Germany and the recent media coverage of the apparent dramatic changes in the Antarctic ice sheet are examples of changes to the environment which are capable of influencing public opinion. There is an increasing awareness of the potential of anthropogenically related sources to alter the balance of the Earth’s ecosystems and a recognition of the vulnerability of important habitats.
