Abstract:

A Permanently manned lunar base will require a considerable amount of power: 100 kW for a small “camp,” in excess of 1 MW for a permanently manned base, and considerably more for a lunar industrial facility. The possible options for the power source are solar and nuclear. There is considerable interest in making such a lunar base solar powered, owing to political and technical barriers to the use of nuclear power.
