Abstract:

Lunar lavatube caverns are probably an excellent resource as sites for lunar bases, hundreds of meters across and kilometres long. They would provide a constant ambient temperature for a base in an environment sheltered from solar storms, micrometeorites and other hazards of the lunar surface environment [l]. Calculations from the structural characteristics of lavatubes on Earth indicate that lunar lavatubes may range up to 380m in width with an overburden averaging 50m (2]. They are an option that requires investigation in any lunar base planning.
