Abstract:

A means of propelling small robotic probes to the outer Solar System and near-interstellar space is explored in this paper. Miniaturisation is reducing the size and mass of spacecraft instruments so that a modest pay load of 50 to 100 kilograms can accommodate several experiments and the associated support systems. Lightweight laser communication systems will make possible high data transmission rates with only tens of watts of power.
