Abstract:

It is well-established that the largest single element of the Russian space programme was the series of photoreconnaissance satellites, most of which were based upon the original Vostok design from Sergei Korolyov. We now know from Russian literature that the photoreconnaissance variants of Vostok had the overall designator Zenit, although the full details of the Zenit designator system have still to be made public.
