Abstract:
Rendezvous and docking have been essential elements in the space programmes of the United States and the Soviet Union. The USSR experienced considerable difficulty in its early manned programme, no less than seven manned missions failing to achieve rendezvous or docking in the course of 1968-83. Most of these failures were denied, covered up, lied about or otherwise explained away at the time. Now, many years later, we can understand better the nature and significance of these difficulties.
