Abstract:

To meet the very stringent accuracy requirements of the mission, a thorough payload verification and calibration had to be performed at the start of the mission before any useful scientific data could be collected. This calibration was performed between September and November, 1989. In addition to calibrations performed at the European Space Operations Centre (ESOC) the scientific data reduction consortia themselves perform the calibrations that have no operational impact, using normal mission data . The remaining calibrations can be subdivided into geometric and photometric categories.
