Abstract:
After studying the planets, satellites and minor bodies of the outer solar system from space, landers and other robotic devices able to study them in detail will be sent to their surface and in their atmospheres. To maximize the scientific return of these missions, the robots must be able to extend the range of their study to an area as wide as possible around the landing point. Three points are identified as critical: mobility, autonomy for devices operating so far from human operators and power systems.
