Abstract:
Science will be an important goal for martian expeditions, as it has been for past and present expeditions on Earth. The search for evidence of a second genesis of life on Mars, and investigating the biochemical nature of that life are the scientific questions that are most compelling and capable of sustaining major scientific expeditions. Promising target sites include subsurface ecosystems and ancient organisms preserved in salt deposits or frozen in permafrost.
