Abstract:
A mission to the focal line of the gravitational lens of the Sun has been suggested as a first precursor interstellar mission. The present paper considers some problems which are inherent to missions of this type and which may require control and propulsion technologies beyond the present technical feasibility. In particular, the inadequacy of gravitational lens missions for the search of unknown objects or radio-sources, as in the case of the detailed study of other planetary systems or of SETI, is highlighted.
