Abstract:

THE SOVIET UNION HAS NOT devised a fully consistent way of designating its launch vehicles which has reached the public domain. In the West two systems have evolved, one having its roots in American military intelligence and the other being introduced by Dr. Charles S. Sheldon II in the TRW Space Log for Winter 1968-1969. Here, the two systems will be briefly outlined and a cross-reference Table is provided showing the equivalent vehicles in each system.
