Abstract:

ESA has been conducting a study over the past two years, first to try and visualise the world ‘s social, political, economic and cultural trends in the next 25 years or so, second, to assess how they might impact on space activities and third to examine ways in which space agencies, systems and services could meet the demands of such a future society. The article provides an overview of the study, known as Space 2020, and the scenarios considered possible at that time, together with a discussion of some of the areas especially relevant to future European space efforts.
