Abstract:

T he NORE Group is primarily engaged in rocket and satellite investigations of the polar upper atmosphere. Of prime interest are studies of the dynamic structure and energy balance of the lower ionosphere, plasma instabilities and waves in the ionosphere, and acceleration mechanisms of auroral particles. Considerable effort s are being devoted to small-scale modification experiments in the upper atmosphere, using rocket- and satellite-borne particle accelerators to simulate auroral processes. The Group is involved in studies of radio wave propagation and the effects of the ionosphere on communication and navigation systems. The dynamics of the upper mesosphere and lower thermosphere are studied at EI SCAT and the LID AR observatory on Andøya .
