Abstract:

The Soviet Union plans to launch the first in a series of astrophysical observatories in 1993. Named Spectrum-Roentgen-Gamma, the observatory class mission will provide a stabilised platform for the study of X- and Gamma-ray sources. The instruments on the platform are being built by teams from the Soviet Union, Denmark, the UK, Italy, The Federal Republic of Germany, Finland and the United States. The aim of the instrument complex is the study of X-ray and Gamma-ray sources over a wide range and with the best spatial and spectral resolution simultaneously. The UK, together with collaborating institutes in Italy, Germany, the USSR and ESTEC, is providing the Joint European Telescope for X-ray astronomy, JET-X.
