Abstract:

Remote manipulation has a multi-decade history in space exploration and space operations at NASA. Both the unmanned and the manned programmes have used the technology available in distinctively different approaches. The former, constrained by significant communication delays and bandwidth limitation, developed a limited capability for the autonomous execution of pre-established tasks by using preprogramed sequences and processors reprogrammable from the ground (e.g.: Viking lander).
