Abstract:

There is a standard scenario in which Mars is “terraformed” as follows: 24mb of C02 is vaporized from the South Residual Cap, and this thickens the atmosphere enough that greenhouse warming plus increased advection from the tropics warms the higher latitudes. Due to the warming, the rest of the cap is vaporized and C02 adsorbed in the regolith is liberated, resulting in a C02 atmosphere thick enough that liquid water can exist, people can walk around without spacesuits (but with breathers) and plants may possibly grow in the open.
