Abstract:

Who could have predicted ten years ago when ERS-1 was proposed that, by the time of its launch in 1990, there would be such an urgent need to study the devastating effects of man’s activities on our fragile atmosphere? Now, with the increasing awareness of the depletion of the ozone layer and the accumulation of ‘greenhouse’ gases, world attention is beginning to be focused on the need for global co-operation in the study of our atmosphere and climate. Only with such an international effort will an answer be found to this world-threatening problem.
