Abstract:

TEN YEARS AGO the Soviet Union and the United States decided, for reasons that may never be fully known, to abandon exploration of the Moon. Although lunar missions continued for a few cars and their abundant scientific results are still being exploited, neither nation now acknowledges any commitment to a future lunar flight programme. Therefore, it will probably be a long time before the next great milestone in space travel-sustained inhabitation of the Moon – is achieved.
