Abstract:

An examination of the Earth observation satellites planned for the 1990s and beyond shows a continuation or a trend towards increased variety and greater numbers of satellites. As a result, the volume of Earth observation data is growing very rapidly . By the early part of the 21st century the data rate from civil Earth observation satellites will be of the order of 20 x 10(12) bits per day . There is, therefore, a significant step change in prospect in the volume or data which will have to be managed. As the volume of data increases there will be a continuing need for users to be able to gain access to these data speedily and efficiently.
