Abstract:

ALTHOUGH THE TECHNOLOGY and societal commitment to begin interstellar exploration by human beings is a century or more in the future, experience with theoretical systems studies of interstellar probes and space colonies provides the foundation to begin planning the first interstellar colonization mission. Even at this early time it is possible to assemble an array of advanced technologies and concepts which, in combination, make an interstellar colonization mission feasible. Interstellar colonization, we contend, is not for the dim, remote future but will perhaps be within the ken of our grandchildren.
