Abstract:

The war rocket had been introduced into British service with the Royal Navy (RN) in 1805. Developed by Sir William Congreve 2nd Bart, the design had changed around 1817 when the side stick was repositioned on the rear face of the rocket in order to improve the accuracy and overall performance. In 1845 the main users were the RN and the Royal Marine Artillery (RMA). The Army was represented by the single surviving Rocket Troop of the Royal Horse Artillery.
