Abstract:

Born in 1908, Nikolai Petrovich Kamanin first entered the public eye at the age of 25, having become one of the seven first people to be awarded the title of Hero of’ the Soviet Union. Along with six other airmen he rescued the crew and passengers of the Soviet steamer Chelyushkin, which became squashed in Arctic ice during a polar expedition in 1934.
