Abstract:

Robert H. Goddard (1882-1945) and Hermann Oberth (1894-1989) have generally been recognized as two 0f the three founding fathers of spaceflight, the third being Konstantin Tsiolkovsky (1857- 1935), who is not considered in this article. Both Goddard and Oberth contributed in various ways to the development of Western missiles and rocketry, but despite their similar pursuits and goals, they were vastly different personalities who left behind contradictory legacies of considerable importance.
