Abstract:

We consider the origins of the prototype missile early warning satellite system MIDAS in the late 1950s. The appearance of early warning in the suite of missions under consideration by the USAF is described and the administrative and technical problems encountered before the first recorded success in 1963 are elucidated. The reasons why infrared early warning was not one of the earliest military space technologies to be operational are considered.
