Abstract:

ON 9 MARCH 1974 the UK satellite Miranda (X4), international designation 1974-13A, was launched on a Scout vehicle into a nominally sub-synchronous orbit with its plane perpendicular to the sun line and with apogee and perigee at 930 km and 720 km respectively. The prime objective of the Miranda mission was to prove the satellite’s inertial and sun referenced 3 axis attitude control system. This control system maintains the satellite pitch axis sun pointing.
