Abstract:

AN EARLIER DISCUSSION [1] indicated that life can be understood in terms of its informational and energetic aspects. The model presented can be improved however and a more useful terminology developed. This helps to provide a deeper understanding of the nature of living organisms, its potential variety in the universe, and the environmental regimes in which it is to be found. The model presented has both a useful descriptive and predictive ability. It can be used to distinguish between living organisms, viruses, Fox’s microspheres, and Oparin’s coacervates, and to explain the failure of the Viking lander’s biology experiments to reveal either positively or negatively the presence of living organisms on Mars.
