Abstract:

Recent meetings between the Soviets and the Americans have raised the possibility of flying a US NASA Astronaut on a Soyuz TM-Mir mission and a Soviet Cosmonaut on a Shuttle-Spacelab life sciences mission within the next few years. Promoted as a logical follow-on mission to the highly successful 1975 US/USSR joint Apollo Soyuz Test Project (ASTP), the reflights would strengthen a partnership between the two spacefaring nations that has suffered somewhat over the past decade.
