Abstract:

At the start of the SpaceAge most of the satellites placed in orbit had relatively small masses, as compared to spacecraft launched today. This was, in part, driven by the relatively limited capabilities of launchers which were available, but also by relatively limited goals. Over the intervening years, as the performance of launch vehicles, the complexity of spacecraft and the aspirations of designers and builders of satellites have all increased, then the masses and volumes of satellites have increased to fill the pay load space that is made available to them.
