Abstract:

The first Wide-Field/Planetary Camera (WFPC-1) was designed and built as a cooperative effort between the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and California Institute of Technology
(Caltech) under contract to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). WFPC is one of five science instruments on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) which was initially scheduled to launch in 1983. Due to a number of technical problems with the main part of the telescope and the grounding of the shuttle fleet for almost three years following the 1986 Challenger accident, the HST launch was delayed several times before it finally got off the ground on 24 April 1990, seven years late.
