Abstract:

The ESA-NASA mission to explore the heliosphere in three dimensions began on 6 October 1990, with the successful launch of the Ulysses spacecraft onboard the Space Shuttle Discovery, and the subsequent injection of the satellite into an ecliptic transfer orbit to Jupiter by means of a combined two stage IUS/PAM-S solid rocket motor. Following a cruise phase lasting over 16 months, Ulysses arrived at Jupiter where the strong gravitational field of the giant planet was used to deflect the satellite into a high inclination orbit over the southern pole of the Sun.
