Abstract:

On October 4th, 1957 Sputnik 1, a 58 centimetre, 83.6 kilogram, shining sphere was launched by Russia into low Earth orbit from the Tyuratum launch complex (now known as Baikonur) and changed forever peoples’ perception of space (1). This tiny satellite carried equipment to gather information on density, temperature and indirectly, cosmic rays and micrometeoroid activity and returned the information on frequencies of 20.005 and 40.002 MHz. This goal could only be achieved by applying the technical efforts of a World superpower.
