Abstract:
Muscle atrophy is one of the main physiological adaptations which occurs in microgravity. It is an important consideration in long duration space flight, affecting the capacity to re-adapt to gravity on return to Earth. With astronaut numbers small and controlled experiments in space difficult, attention has focused on an Earth based model to simulate the muscular inactivity of microgravity. Prolonged bed rest provides such a model.
