Abstract:

The ERS-1 satellite consists of a platform and 3 principle scientific instruments. These are the AMI (Active Microwave Instrumentation), which performs synthetic aperture radar imaging of the Earth, the RA (Radar Altimeter), which allows measurement of significant wave height and wind speed and the ATSR/ M (Along Track Scanning Radiometer/Microwave sounder), which performs accurate measurements of sea surface temperature. To transmit the science data to the ground the satellite also carries the IDHT (Instrument Data Handling and Transmission System) which, in operational complexity, can be considered as another instrument. A passenger experiment, the Precision Range And Range Rate Experiment (PRARE) is also carried. With the exception of the PRARE, all are controlled from ESOC.
